Melasma & Hyperpigmentation Correction — Clarity II Laser Treatment
The Stubborn Discoloration That Creams Can't Fix
Melasma is in a category of its own. Unlike sun spots or post-acne marks, it's a hormonally driven condition that causes deep, diffuse patches of pigmentation — most commonly across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin. It's notoriously difficult to treat, and over-the-counter products rarely make a meaningful dent.
The Clarity II laser gives us a more powerful tool. By targeting excess melanin precisely and at the right depth, we can achieve real, visible improvement in melasma and other forms of stubborn hyperpigmentation — without the irritation that comes with aggressive chemical approaches.
Understanding Melasma
Melasma develops when melanocytes — the cells responsible for producing skin pigment — become overactive, often triggered by hormonal changes, sun exposure, or heat. It's especially common during pregnancy, while on hormonal birth control, or around menopause. Because it's driven internally as well as externally, it requires a more careful, layered approach than other pigmentation concerns.
This also means that managing melasma is an ongoing process. Laser treatment can significantly reduce its appearance, but sun protection and maintenance are essential to keeping results long-term.
How the Clarity II Helps
The Clarity II targets the excess melanin responsible for hyperpigmented patches, breaking it down so the body can gradually clear it. Its precise calibration allows treatment of pigmentation at varying depths — important with melasma, which often sits deeper in the skin than surface sun spots.
Treatment is carefully planned to deliver effective results while minimizing the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can be a concern with more aggressive laser settings on pigmentation-prone skin.

What to Expect
Sessions are comfortable, with most patients describing a warm snapping sensation during treatment. Session length varies depending on the size of the affected area, typically running 30–45 minutes.
Because melasma can be reactive, treatment is approached conservatively — starting at appropriate settings and adjusting based on how your skin responds. Some initial darkening of treated areas is normal and expected before the pigment clears. You'll be advised on sun avoidance and appropriate skincare to protect your results between sessions.
Number of sessions: Melasma typically requires more sessions than straightforward sun spot removal — most patients need 4–6 treatments or more, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with an individualized plan based on depth, skin tone, and how the skin responds. Tammy will be upfront with you about realistic expectations during your consultation.
Important: Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable
With melasma especially, sun exposure is one of the primary drivers of recurrence. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily — even on cloudy days — is essential during and after your treatment course. Tammy will walk you through a full aftercare protocol to help protect and extend your results.
Is It Right for Me?
Melasma treatment requires a personalized approach. Skin tone, hormonal status, pigmentation depth, and prior treatments all factor into what's appropriate. During your consultation, Tammy will assess your specific presentation and discuss whether the Clarity II is the right tool — or whether a combination approach would serve you better.
